This innovative idea was so successful that Smith and New decided to incorporate their own business, La Choy Food Products Company, in 1922, and to use metal to can a variety of Oriental vegetables in addition to bean sprouts. New said he was well acquainted with how to grow bean sprouts, and the two men came up with the idea of canning bean sprouts in glass jars. He thought of his old friend New, a Korean by birth, and asked him whether he had any knowledge or expertise in the matter. Smith, an American who owned his own grocery store in Detroit, Michigan, wanted to sell bean sprouts that were fresh grown to bring a more varied product line to his customers. The two men met and developed a close friendship while students at the University of Michigan during the early years of the 20th century, and both had become successful businessmen. La Choy Food Products Company was the brainchild of two friends, Wally Smith and Ilhan New. Yet, for all its emphasis on high-quality ingredients, the company has experienced difficulty increasing its sales volume during the 1980s and 1990s, because of the introduction of tastier frozen foods and the proliferation of quick-service, Chinese take-out restaurants. The company has become famous for preparing its products with fresh ingredients: it ships shortening from Indiana bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, and pineapple from Taiwan, Thailand, and China mung bean seeds from Oklahoma pepper and carrots from California and Idaho and large amounts of chicken, beef, and pork from a number of Midwestern states. La Choy ’s food product line includes soy sauce, bean sprouts, chow mein noodles, pepper steak dinners, fancy mixed vegetables, chop suey vegetables, and a host of other items. The company has a strong hold on more than 40 percent of the shelf-stable Oriental food market in the United States, with its closest rival Chun King maintaining approximately a 20 percent share of the market. is the oldest and most successful American-based producer of Oriental food products for the grocery or supermarket shelf. Am not fond of any system in particular, I just love a good story and a good game. People will nitpick it, say it isn't accurate or following lore, or it's a remake, or they will hate it simply cause it's on the Wii. I saw the bad endings on Youtube, and they would have severely bummed me out if I saw those instead.Īnyway, I liked this game for what it is and enjoyed it alot. I got the good ending right off the bat, in fact the best ending. The UFO ending is awesome, and is almost worth the entire price of the game alone. As well as other minor details that made you ask "What the fuck?" Or there was detail or pictures that didn't quite fit right, like the Red X over a picture of a cat, or the "Dissection = Resurrection" in the class room. While there weren't alot of optional places to go in Shattered Memories, there were multiple paths, each one with something weird inside of it. just an empty room to explore and shit in your pants about later. No items, no goal, not even a mandatory key for later. Maybe I'm the only one who remembers rooms in Silent Hill 1 and 2 that had absolutely no purpose other then to scare the shit out of you. One of the things the game has missed almost since Silent Hill 2 was subtlety, yeah, Shattered Memories isn't as subtle as 1 or 2, but it's getting there. Graphics are pretty damn good, I don't care what system it's on. I think they are starting to really get what Silent Hill is.įacial animations are very well done. But this is very good, I'd like to see more of what they can do with the series, they at least deserve another game to see what they can do. All and all though, I liked a different nightmare world for a change.Ĭlimax Studios is forgiven for Silent Hill Origins, I didn't like Origins, couldn't finish it. It needed more disturbing imagery, and there are ways you could have done that in the Frozen World better then this game did. That was the only time I saw something that really was freaky, when it came to the School, I think it would have been alot more frightening if there weren't just ice status, but actual people frozen in time. I remember running into the Hunter's Lodge and seeing the bear frozen in ice, and pausing a second going "What the fuck?" even though I should have been busy running. The Frozen World needed more Frozen people. I enjoyed this game alot more then I did Homecoming, but Homecoming had some quality moments too. You could have done something similar in this to make combat a way to defend yourself, but not actually a way to defeat the monsters. Silent Hill 2 and 4 balanced this out a little better by either having the monsters sometimes be super powerful like Pyramid Head, or completely unstoppable ghosts like in 4. But I would have liked to have seen a tad more combat, yeah, running from monsters was intense and scary sometimes, but at times it just got corny. This is a different kind of Silent Hill game, this game in my opinion has brought to the table a good idea for the series to go in the future in regards to the psychological profiling. If Silent Hill 3 was a sequel of Silent Hill 1 if the good ending was true, this would be lore if the bad ending were true. Okay, this is clearly a sequel to Silent Hill 1 if you got the bad ending. It sounds so dramatically different I had no idea till a friend who was over said it. did anyone realize that the theme song "Always on my Mind" is a remix of a Elvis song? I didn't know that. I'll cut this for people who haven't finished it.īut before I do. See additional information on the Disclosures webpage. Registration does not imply a level of skill or training. This is what a rebuild feels like, trading your best players away and trying to get the best package of picks/young players/tradable veterans back you can. Whether or not this version of the Celtics can take that final step remains to be seen, but a change was needed. The Celtics needed to be different because what they had may have gotten them to the Eastern Conference Finals (or further) four of the last six years, but they always fell just short. Can Jayson Tatum? Is it a collective thing?īoston is going to be different. It’s a chance to get back to playing the two-big lineups that Ice Udoka leaned into for defense - and doing so without sacrificing floor spacing on offense - but this team isn’t switchable the same way.Īlso, who steps up to be the emotional leader in the absence of Smart? Jaylen Brown (who is about to get PAID) could do it. The last few years in Boston were defined by a switchable defense, and while they played more drop coverage last season than ever before, they will break that record this season. More than the durability question, Smart out and Porzingis in changes the character of how this team plays. The Celtics need him on the court, too, and the Clippers were not willing to bet that would happen. Can KP stay on the floor?Īlong those same lines, without Smart the Celtics are leaning more into Brogdon, who played 67 games last season in winning Sixth Man of the Year, but he hadn’t played that many games since his rookie season. But those 65 games were the most he has played in a season since his second year in the league in 2016-17. So they answer those questions with Porzingis? The Porzingis from last season who played 65 games and averaged 23.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks a night playing at an All-Star level on both ends of the court, absolutely helps this team. They are understandably worried about the knees and durability of Robert Williams III. Boston is understandably concerned about the durability of 37-year-old Al Horford about to enter his 17th NBA season. This particular trade comes with risks and with potential. Boston did on paper what it wanted to do this offseason, thinning out the too-deep guard ranks while getting bigger and deeper on the front line. It’s also because these Celtics will be quite different from the ones we saw last season. They are trying to move up in Thursday’s draft and there will be other trades and signings to round out the role players on this roster. That’s because, first, the Celtics are not done yet. If you ask the Magic 8 Ball if the Celtics are winners or losers in this trade, it would respond “Ask again later.” Saying Celtics fans are losers in this may be a bit strong of a phrasing (it is a winners and losers column, that’s a rather binary choice) but there should be a little sadness with this deal. Losing Smart stings - even if you loved the trade for the Celtics, and there are reasons to love the potential this trade brings. Smart, for all his flaws, was loved by Celtics fans because he left his heart on the floor when he played. Whatever comes next in Boston, for better or worse, will be different. That may not be a bad thing, this Celtics team just kept coming up a little bit short - against the Heat this season in the Eastern Conference Finals, against the Warriors in the Finals the season before - but this was a good team and Smart was the emotional leader. This feels like a change of eras in Boston. So they did.Īlso, Smart helps in the 25 games to start the season while Ja Morant is serving his suspension. He was about to get too expensive and Memphis was going to have to trade him. While it stings to lose a quality backup point guard in Tyus Jones, he will make $14 million this season and then be an unrestricted free agent that will be hunted by teams looking for a starting one. Someone who will call out anyone, including the biggest star on the team, if they are a distraction or not pulling their weight. Someone intense and who will talk smack but does not lose focus. That’s as good a start to an elite defense as a team can have.īeyond that, this Grizzlies team needs maturity and focus, and they just landed a fiery veteran leader who will not put up with crap from an immature team. WINNER: Memphis Grizzliesįirst off, the last two Defensive Players of the Year now play for the Grizzlies, Smart and this year’s Jaren Jackson Jr. Who won and who lost? Let’s break it down. Transport to the sea in rivers, plus inputs of salts from hydrothermal The supply of salts comes from weathering of rocks on land, and then How did the ocean get so salty? The answer is that There are two important points here: (1) these differences in chemical composition contribute to the diversity of ecosystems and the diversity of life that has adapted to different water bodies, and (2) the amounts of salt contribute to the weight or density of the water which is important for how water bodies are structured or layered, as discussed more fully below. This recognition of birds as “distinctly unhuman” while possessing convergent traits persists in modern ecological theory, enabling productive transhistorical comparisons (7). Thus, although medieval writers might identify with birds in ways that trouble species boundaries, birds also resist assimilation into anthropocentric frameworks. According to Warren, birds merit particular attention because medieval philosophers viewed these vocal, bipedal beings as strikingly similar to humans, while recognizing their morphological differences. Warren therefore argues that literary scholars stand to benefit from addressing the philosophical and ecological contexts of medieval poetry, since the actual characteristics of animal species often underlie their metaphorical functions. Despite this orthodox position, however, many writers describe animals in detailed and sympathetic terms, providing insight into close interspecies relationships. As Warren observes in his introduction, medieval texts present unique obstacles to research on nonhuman animals, since premodern writers generally assumed an absolute distinction between humans and other species. Warren’s Birds in Medieval English Poetry is the second installment in a promising new series, Nature and Environment in the Middle Ages, and an inspiring contribution to critical animal studies. It isn’t going to win any awards for its musical output but it feels only slightly behind the Echo Dot in this respect. The sound quality isn’t bad at all for such a dinky device. In conclusion, the Echo Show 5 (1st Gen, 2019 release) is a fantastic smart display that truly enhances connectivity in our daily lives. Using the power adapter included with your Echo Show 5, plug one end into the power port on the back of the smart screen and the other into a nearby electrical outlet. It’s propped up by a triangular base and covered in the same speaker-grille fabric seen on Amazon’s other recent smart speakers. So, as well as playing music or reading out information, you can access video content on the 5. Where much of the Alexa-enabled kit out there is audio based, concentrated on the Bluetooth speaker market in particular, the Echo Show 5 embraces both sound and video in its abilities to communicate. The Echo Show 5 is, like most Echo speakers, neat and well designed and, if you’re a bit fed up of seeing giant screens wherever you turn in your house, it’s a nice antidote. : Certified Refurbished Echo Show 5 (1st Gen, 2019 release) Compact smart display with Alexa - Charcoal : Amazon Devices & Accessories.
